Seth Epling, M.S. Global in Infectious Disease 2023
Medical student, Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont
How did the M.S. in Global Infectious Disease program help prepare you for your career trajectory?
The M.S. Global Infectious Disease program opened doors to career paths I didn’t even know existed. I entered the program with broad interests in infectious disease and the translation of scientific research into policy, but the curriculum and mentorship helped me refine those interests into concrete goals. The program also connected me with professionals across diverse fields, which helped my decision to pursue medicine. Through the Global Health Institute Fellowship with Dr. Margaret Baker, I also developed a strong passion for health care access which is something that continues to shape my education and long-term career plans.
What’s your advice for alums thinking about a master’s degree?
A master’s program is an excellent opportunity to explore your interests more deeply and intentionally. In undergrad, I was exposed to many topics, but my master’s allowed me to tailor my learning and experiences to what I truly wanted to explore. It also introduced me to people and career paths I would not have encountered otherwise, helping me move toward my educational and career goals.
